Purpose in being a teacher Robert Anaya
I hope to convey information and knowledge by activating critical thought in the minds of students. This sounds like BS so i will simply say i want kids to think and learn and question perceived and assumed truths. I believe i have life experiences that can help form an interest in the young minds of our youth. Growing up i had teachers that made an impact in my life that was strong enough to carry me through many of life's challenges. Core concepts, simple statements, encouragement, discipline, humor, work these are all characteristics that a handful of teachers really helped me understand and refine through my school years. My aim is to try and replicate some of what was given to me. I will try and create a classroom that is respectful and structured. Structure that is positive and discipline but also safe for kids to learn and openly express their thought. A class that doesn't teach a lesson for the sake of the lesson but rather how that lesson correlates to the world we live in. I believe all people have the capacity to learn and work together. I believe respect for people is fundamental to a high quality of life. I believe malice has no place in society. I believe we must continually recognize the limits of our own knowledge and bias. I believe i can fly, i believe i can touch the sky (its getting late please stop me).

I too believe you can fly, unfortunately the Patriots will obliterate the Giants and lose by at least 2 because they will forget to call a time out and the Giants will kick the winning field goal with 0.01 on the clock. Tears for Brady... but I like your blog too!
ReplyDeleteI like your statement "I believe respect for people is fundamental to a high quality of life."
ReplyDeleteI also believe that that is true, I also believe in the old motto, treat others as you expect to be treated. I have experienced some differences in those thoughts as I have moved across the country. Different states seem to have differing viewpoints on respect. People in Hawaii are very respectful to their elders and they really do live aloha. NJ, my home state, is fast paced, and sometimes people are lacking in tact, and respect. It has been interesting to watch my very "Jersey" relatives interact with others when they visit us in whatever state we happen to be in at the moment. So, I think the concept of respect can be cultural, but I think it can and should be learned by all.
Hi Robert, I think that life experiences are essential to being a good teacher. I also think that relating whatever content is being taught to the real/ concrete world is very useful to students. It seems that you have a pretty good idea of how you want your classes to be carried out; and it all seems constructive. I appreciate the point you made at the end of the blog where you state “we must continually recognize the limits of our own knowledge and bias.” This is very true, and I don’t think that people do this enough. If people were a little more self-aware, understanding and respectful of one another, and a little less self-righteous, I think there would be much less anger and conflict on both small and large scales.
ReplyDeleteWell just to let you know, it almost happened that way. Life experience speaks for people and personal interactions. It also leads to self reflection and the awareness that at times asking for the right answer is impossible if you ask the wrong question. In another words- it is important to think outside the box. Experience tells us that sitting in a class makes us think as an instructor directs us- if we as students learn from our experience to ask a question on topic but off subject- the answer becomes richer, if the teacher is competent. Rambling a little- Doing the same back to the student is a means to make them think and not regurgitate. Talking Biology. Asking the question- why do tadpoles seem to live in large numbers where there is little water? You expect no one to get the answer, we are talking about habitats and drying lakes. But we are about to jump into why some creatures survive longer or are more sensitive to environmental changes. Canary in coal mine, Beagles and drugs that affect cardiac conduction in a negative way not seen in humans- here we are bridging to directing them to tell us what it is that is necessary for an animal to survive. Someone will say, or you can direct them to Oxygen and bang, you get them on topic with the bridge to why the tadpole lives longer- he binds oxygen to Hb more tightly and rapidly and can saturate at lower oxygen pressures. Giants- shame.
